Bec Lorrimer of @TripInAVan travels full time with her husband and young family. Here she tells us why her hometown is the perfect summer destination.

I am a born and bred Warrnambool girl who has travelled the country multiple times. After visiting hundreds of towns across Australia, you soon realise how wonderful, safe, tidy and fun Warrnambool is. Warrnambool holds a very special place in our hearts, and although we travel full time, it will always be home to us.

Summer in Warrnambool has everything going for it. The beach vibes are at an all-time high and the place is full of family friendly activities.

It’s a brilliant place to spend the school holidays, as we often have! Living in a caravan, we always stay at the Surfside Holiday Parks, as the name suggests the park is right next to the beach. It has great access to the fantastic events on hand, from the markets and gigs to the extensive range of free beachside activities for families, aptly named Beachfest.

On the Warrnambool Foreshore and surrounds, Beachfest is an incredible family event offering a range of beachside activities from the 27th December to Australia Day. Many of the activities are free and the line-up includes beach sports such as cricket, soccer and surfing, creative artists in residence, yoga and meditation, night markets, twilight movies, sand sculpture workshops and roving entertainment. It really is loads of fun and our family have been involved in several of these activities.

Have you seen the movie Oddball? It is most definitely a family favourite in our household! I was really proud to show my kids this wonderful story of how Maremma dogs were trained to protect the colony of Little Penguins on Middle Island – especially as I had spent many of my summers swimming at Stingray Bay and walking over to Middle island to spot a penguin.

Meet the Maremmas Tours are a unique experience only on offer over the Summer Holidays. This interactive and educational tour explains why it’s important to protect the penguins and the story behind these guardian dogs and the Penguin Project. You will have an opportunity to meet and grab a pic with the Maremma dogs that protect the Island.

One holiday program I highly recommend is Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. Apart from the fact that it is packed with history where you don’t just learn about it - you experience it, the daily school holiday program is loaded with excellent activities. With family friendly events including ‘New Year’s Eve on the Hill’, 5km Fun Runs and live music at ‘Chill on the Hill’ among so many other excellent family friendly experiences. It’s always a highlight when staying in Warrnambool over the Summer holidays and I know you will love it just as much as us.

I hope to see you in Warrnambool this Summer.
