Swim, surf, sun and some silliness. Warrnambool is surrounded by coastline offing a mix of protected swimming beaches, exposed surf breaks and fun exploration. Did you know there are over 29 known, although not all found, shipwrecks in the area?
Running between the Breakwater and the famous whale nursery at Logans Beach, is the award-winning Foreshore Promenade. The Foreshore Promenade is a scenic trail popular with walkers, runners, cyclists and skaters. Take a towel, stop off for a surf or swim, and don’t forget your camera.
The historic 1890 Breakwater has great views of the harbour and the city. At the mouth of the Merri River, Stingray Bay, is a beautiful sheltered cove where you can explore crystal-clear rock pools.
Warrnambool’s picturesque Lady Bay offers protected swimming along with surfing, yachting and windsurfing. There are over 29 shipwrecks in Lady Bay with interpretative signage highlighting some of the tragedies.

Lady Bay Foreshore
Warrnambool has its history based around the busy Lady Bay port. Today whilst the port has reduced in activity we now celebrate Lady Bay for its beautiful environment and views from a range of locations.
The Foreshore Promenade links the historic breakwater to Logans Beach. The sealed pathway starts with great views at the 1890 Breakwater, passes Lake Pertobe, follows around Lady Bay (it can be tempting to divert to the beach), crosses the mouth of the Hopkins River estuary, and ends at the whale nursery at Logans Beach. The path is suitable for all forms of wheeled transport including bikes, rollerblades, wheelchairs and prams.
On the eastern bank of the Hopkins River mouth is Logans Beach. Logans Beach is most famous as the nursing ground for the Southern Right Whale. Each year, roughly between late May and early October, the whales return to Logan’s Beach where in clear view of the shore, the gentle mothers and their giant children loll about and play, enjoying the shelter of Lady Bay.
The Middle Island Maremma Project is a unique environmental program that uses a special breed of Maremma dogs to protect birds and penguins from fox and dog predation. The Maremma breed has been used in Italy for centuries to protect domestic animals, but wild birds were a new challenge.
