  • Turn left at the Merri St/Pertobe Rd roundabout as you exit the Visitor Information Centre www.visitwarrnambool.com.au carpark and drive along Pertobe Road to Lake Pertobe – a 20 hectare adventure playground with activities for children and adults of all ages.   The area has walking tracks around the lakes, free barbeques, paddle & motor boats, cricket net, picnic shelters, free play equipment, maze.

  • Continue along Pertobe Road to the Breakwater precinct and Lady Bay.   Take a scenic walk along the ForeshorePromenade which stretches from the Breakwater to the Logans Beach Southern Right whale nursery. Walk the entire 5.7 kilometres or have a refreshment overlooking the ocean.

  • Cross the Viaduct Road footbridge and walk, on a timber boardwalk, past Middle Island, home to Warrnambool’s famous Maremma dogs which protect the penguin population, to PickeringPoint, (rockpools at low tide) then to Thunder Point Reserve and observe the powerful forces of the great Southern Ocean which have carved out the rock formations and caves found at Thunder Point.
      
  • Alternatively drive to Thunder Point via Stanley Street and Macdonald Street to enjoy the great views from this vantage point.

  • Return via Macdonald Street to Merri Street, drive past the picturesque Railway Station to Cannon Hill which is situated behind the War Memorial.  Enjoy the panoramic view of the Southern Ocean and foreshore area and inspect the unique Portuguese Padrao which commemorates the legend of the fabled Mahogany Ship.

  • Continue along Merri Street past Flagstaff Hill Maritime Villagewww.flagstafhill.com and past the Flume, a Warrnambool surfing spot.   Turn left into Ward Street and right into Nicholson Street, and along Otway Road to Hopkins Road.  Turn left into Marfell Road and turn right before the bridge to Point Ritchie lookout where the Hopkins River mouth meets the sea. www.moyjil.com.au

  • Return to Marfell Road and turn right to cross the bridge and then right again into Blue Hole Road and follow the signs to the Logans Beach Southern Right Whale nursery lookout.   From June to September whales calve in this small bay and stay until their annual spring migration return to Antarctica in September.

  • Return to the city centre via Otway Road and Flaxman Street visiting the Fletcher Jones gardens and markets on the corner of Flaxman Street and Raglan Parade. Proceed along Raglan Parade (the Princes Highway, A1)

  • The Warrnambool Botanic Gardenswww.wbgardens.com.au in Botanic Road was designed by William Guilfoyle and is still faithful to his original plans and has one of the few remaining originaltrees grown from a pine cone at Lone Pine on Gallipoli. Turn off Raglan Parade (the Princes Highway, A1) at Banyan Street (turn to the north–away from the sea), turn left at Botanic Road and the Gardens are two blocks along.

Tower Hill, Koroit, Port Fairy

Warrnambool to Tower Hill
  • Leave the Flagstaff Hill car park exit and turn right into Banyan Street, proceed to Raglan Parade (the Princes Highway, A1) and turn left.
  • Travel 14 km west along the Princes Highway (A1) to Tower Hill, www.towerhill.org.au a dormant volcano (last erupted about 30,000 years ago). Carefully make a right hand turn and descend into the volcanic crater observing the layers of ash from repeated eruptions which make up the crater walls. 

  • The cones of the volcano are surrounded by a lake and are a haven for wild life – birds, koalas, emus, kangaroos.   There are walks of varying degrees of difficulty, picnic and barbeque areas, and the Worn Gundidj Visitor Centre which features local Aboriginal arts and crafts. 

  • As you leave the Reserve, turn left and drive around the crater rim to enjoy the magnificent sea and rural views from the lookouts.   Continue around the crater rim or turn off to explore the town of Koroit with its many beautiful old buildings and historic botanical gardens. 

  • Return to the rim drive and continue onto the Princes Highway (A1) at Killarney.

  • Turn right and proceed along the Princes Highway (A1) to Port Fairy, turn left at Regent or Bank Streets and discover the beautiful Moyne River wharf area, beaches, Griffiths Island, historic buildings, walks, galleries and studios.  The Port Fairy Visitor Information Centre www.portfairyaustralia.com.au in Bank Street can give you more information.  

  • Cross the Moyne River Bridge, visit the East Beach and continue along Griffiths Street past the highly rated Port Fairy Golf Links www.portfairygolf.com.au and back to the Princes Highway and turn right to return to Warrnambool.

  • Leave the Flagstaff Hill car park exit and turn right into Banyan Street, proceed to Raglan Parade (the Princes Highway, A1), cross the Highway and follow Banyan Street to reach a large roundabout.    Proceed through the roundabout onto Mortlake Road (Hopkins Highway).  

  • Drive to Wangoom Road and turn right.  Follow the signposts through the farmlands to Wangoom.

  • You may wish to visit the Wangoom Store which serves home style meals seven days a week.   This shop combines a working country store and post office with the café and gift shop.

  • Turn right at the tennis courts and follow the signs to the HopkinsFalls.

  • Park in the car park and observe the falls from your car or from the lookouts. Picnic, barbeque facilities and toilets are available.

  • Turn left out of the car park and proceed back to Warne Road.  Turn left and follow the road back to the Princes Highway (A1) following the route of the Hopkins River part of the way.

  • At the highway turn left and proceed to the Great Ocean Road turnoff.  Turn right and Cheeseworldwww.cheeseworld.com.au is about 1 kilometre along the road.   Cheeseworld features a great range of gourmet cheeses and delicatessen lines, good food, a dairy museum and stationary vintage engine display.

  • Proceed back towards the Princes Highway, but turn left at Zeigler Parade, proceed to Tooram Road, turn left and follow the road to Hopkins Point Road and return to Warrnambool past the Logans Beach whale viewing lookout (take the Blue Hole road turn off and follow the signs to the Lookout). 
  • Leave the Flagstaff Hill car park exit and turn right into Banyan Street, proceed to Raglan Parade (the Princes Highway, A1) and turn left.    Turn right at Caramut Road.

  • About 8 kilometres along Caramut Road is the village of Mailors Flat. On the right hand side of the road is Mailors Flat Antiques and Demolitions. This business features an enormous range of furniture, linens, china, machinery, recycled building materials etc.  This business is closed on Thursdays and Fridays
  • Return back along Caramut Road for approximately 2 kilometers and turn left into Woodford Road.   Enjoy the drive through the little village of Woodford to the Hopkins Highway.  Turn left.

  • Approximately 4 kilometres along the Hopkins Highway you will see George Taylors Disposals www.georgetaylorsstores.com.auon your right. This business has a large range of practically everything and 100+ vintage motorcycles.

  • Ask for directions at the store to Wangoom and the Hopkins Falls. 

  • Turn left out of the car park and proceed back to Warne Road.  Turn left and follow the road back to the Princes Highway (A1) following the route of the Hopkins River part of the way.   

  • At the Highway turn left and proceed to the Great Ocean Road turnoff.  Turn right and Cheeseworld is about 1 kilometre along the road.   Cheeseworld features a great range of gourmet cheeses and delicatessen lines, good food and a dairy museum and stationary engine display.
